NEHEMIAH

Our Prayer for this Series:

"In the Pursuit of meaning you will find Jesus; and in the pursuit of Jesus you will find meaning."

This semester in Sunday School, we will be studying the book of Nehemiah.  At the heart of the book of Nehemiah is the great proclamation of God's enduring faithfulness to his people.  Nehemiah was written about a time in which, according to the promises of God, the people of Israel should have been bursting at the seems with prosperity and blessing from God.  God had brought back his remnant from exile and rebuilt the temple.  Now the remnant of God was supposed to flourish beyond what they ever had before, and the blessing that was to come to the world through Israel should be taking place.  However, the report that Nehemiah receives about this blessed remnant is bleak indeed, "Those who survived the exile and are back in the province are in great trouble and disgrace.  The wall of Jerusalem is broken down, and its gates have been burned with fir e."  Not exactly what they thought God had promised.  Had God left his people? Had God gone back on his promises? Was God ever going to restore his people? Will God's people ever fulfill the purpose for which God made them? These are the rightful questions posed by Nehemiah and the people of Israel.  We must ask the same questions if we are to deal with God seriously.  The story that unfolds in the book of Nehemiah is meant to address these questions.  Join us to discover God's faithfulness even when it's hard to understand, difficult to see, and certainly hard to obey.
