The Lord Is King: A Palm Sunday Sermon Reflection

Today’s post is part of a series to help us take what we learn on Sunday into the rest of the week. These posts summarize the main points from the week’s sermon and include questions for continued reflection and prayer. The posts in this series are written by members of our church’s Adult Christian Formation team.

This past Sunday our service theme was “The Lord is King.” Pastor Bobby preached on Luke 19:28-44 about “The King We Need.” He described the significance of the joy, tears, and beauty that Jesus brought as he entered Jerusalem and that he brings into our lives now.

We see the king’s joy, as Jesus brings something we’re searching for. Many popular myths reflect the hope that a returning king will restore our world. In light of the hope that Jesus brings us, we can experience joy even during difficult times if he reigns over our lives.

We see the king’s tears as Jesus was rejected by the same crowds that had welcomed him. His new set of values, those of a kingdom of peace, did not match up to what people wanted. Even today, Jesus confronts the uncomfortable reality that evil exists in our own hearts. He points out our need to be transformed rather than simply trying to fight the evil we see outside ourselves.

We see the king’s beauty as Jesus demonstrates every quality of greatness in unique ways. We especially see the extent of his love for us in his death on the cross, where he gave everything for us and our salvation.

Questions for prayer and reflection:

  1. Have you received Jesus as your king? If so, what things have been tangibly different about your life?
  2. Can you think of ways that serving Jesus might bring true freedom in your life?
  3. What are some ways that Jesus has shown you or can you show you where evil resides in your heart?
  4. What would you expect to change about the world around you if Jesus enters as the true king?
