Elder

Overview

The purpose of an Elder at NSCBC is to pray for the congregation, oversee the spiritual needs of the church body, decide the direction of the church through producing, authorizing policy, advise the Senior Pastor, arbitrate disputes, discipline members, as well as act on financial matters, legal functions, and communicate with other elected committees, and the congregation.

Responsibilities & Expectations

  • Lead and attend to specific projects as assigned by the Board
  • Focus on spiritual leadership of the church, promoting vision, health of church etc
  • Provide teaching and leadership in areas of discipleship for congregation
  • Presentation of annual budget and promotion of fiscal responsibility
  • Creation of policies or procedures to provide oversight to congregation on matters of importance

Time commitment

  • Weekly meetings with Elder board (Prayer/Business)
  • Frequent communication via email, phone, and in person with other Elders and congregation
  • Additional projects, subcommittee work and events as required by the role
  • Staff development training and retreats

Qualifications

  • Man who is a member at NSCBC
  • Strong communication ability in person, by phone, email, and other methods to remain in contact with both Elders and congregation
    Spiritual maturity as outlined in scripture (1 Peter 5:1-4, Titus 1:5-9, 1 Tim. 3:1-7)
  • Sensitive to the needs of others, and ability to act with integrity and confidentiality as necessary for investigation, discipline, and other
  • Able to work steadily on projects given to them by the Elder Board
  • Effective at organizing and leading groups of people to serve based on projects and teams
  • Related Spiritual Gifts: Administration, Leadership, Knowledge, Teaching, Wisdom, Shepherding

Deacon at Large

Overview

The purpose of the Deacon -at-Large position at NSCBC is to: pray for the congregation, serve the needs of the church body, monitor the practical and physical needs of the body, advise the Elders on annual goals and budget, and guide decisions related to personnel, facilities, technology, and finances. The following responsibilities are split between the Deacon-at-Large members in a way which respects the gifts, experiences, and time of each person on the team.

Responsibilities & Expectations

  • Provide guidance and oversight to community care activities within the church
  • Oversee the Benevolence fund and distribute funds
  • Organize and plan community events which build up the body at NSCBC and ideally serve as a point of outreach for community members
  • Create and execute tangible, practical ways to encourage every member of NSCBC (ex: sending cards and encouraging notes)
  • Coordinate visitation, meals, and hospitality ministries with the aid of others within the church
  • Build teams of NSCBC attenders who can carry out ministry to those within NSCBC
  • Create policies or procedures to streamline activities at NSCBC

Time Commitment

  • Attend monthly meetings for Deacons
  • Actively participate in organizing events and caring for congregation members. Time commitment depends on congregational needs and events occurring each month

Qualifications

  • Man or woman who is a member at NSCBC
  • Spiritual maturity and qualifications as outlined in 1 Timothy 3:8-13
  • Willingness to care and serve other people within the church
  • Sensitive to needs of others
  • Ability to meet 1x a month for meetings with Deacons
  • Able to work steadily on projects given to them by the Deacon Chair
  • Effective at organizing and leading groups of people to serve based on projects and teams
  • Related Spiritual Gifts: Administration, Encouragement, Hospitality, Helps, Mercy, Service

Nominating Committee

Overview

The purpose of the Nominating committee is to discern who would serve the church well in the elected roles of Elder, Deacon-at-Large, Auditor, and Nominating Committee member. They must communicate with all stakeholders well. They must prepare a ballot for the congregation to vote on at church business meetings.

Responsibilities & Expectations

  • Prepare a ballot for church elections in January
  • Prepare a ballot for special business meetings when necessary
  • Communicate with congregation and candidates regarding open positions, requirements, and progress during the nominating process
  • Contact church members who may be suited for the elected positions of Elder, Deacon-at-Large, Auditor, and Nominating Committee

Time Commitment

  • 2-3x meetings per month between September – November
  • Frequent phone/email communication during this time

Qualifications

  • Member at NSCBC
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Ability to speak with others on the phone, through email, and in person
  • Desire to meet people at NSCBC and get to know congregants and their passions, abilities, and spiritual gifts.

Audit Committee

Overview

The purpose of the Audit Committee position at NSCBC is to annually review the financial records of NSCBC and report on the findings to the Finance Committee and Elder board as well as provide recommendations.

Responsibilities & Expectations

  • Conduct Audit of church financial records after the close of the books
  • Report results of all audits to the Elder Board and members
  • Make recommendations to Elder board for changes
  • Make recommendations to the Finance committee regarding establishing financial procedures
  • Monitor church financial processes

Time Commitment

  • This position meets approximately 3x per year with other members of the audit committee to review financial documents for a couple hours each time. Most meetings are conducted at the beginning or end of the calendar year.

Qualifications

  • Detail oriented
  • Comfortable with numbers and financial information
  • Knowledge of financial statements
  • Knowledge of financial law is a plus
  • Ability to meet on a weekend or evening 1-3x per year, for 2-3 hours
  • Ability to prepare statements for review by the Finance Committee
  • Must not be a member of the Finance Committee, the Treasurer, Bookkeeper, or a Counter
