2024 Lenten Devotional: The Kingdom through the Cross

Our little Lenten devotional is a journey through scripture and practice that takes us from Ash Wednesday to Easter together. Together, because spiritual practices were never meant to be done in isolation from community. We’ve created this Lenten devotional as a resource as we embark on two separate but very much inter-related journeys: Reflective Reading and Reflective Practice. We encourage you to join with your small group, discipleship group, family, or simply invite one friend for the journey. Some practices are designed so they could be shared with a friend or neighbor – even if they aren’t yet sure what they believe about Jesus.

Prayer & Devotional Books & Articles

Prayer: Experiencing Awe and Intimacy with God by Tim Keller. We experience God powerfully through prayer. Keller guides the reader in how to make prayer meaningful – through sample prayers, instruction for developing a practice of prayer, and discussion about forming personal and powerful prayers.

A Praying Life by Paul Miller. This practical book discusses how one’s relationship with God can grow through prayer. It presents how prayer – even imperfectly delivered – fills the gaps in our lives with meaning and substance.

Gospel Renewal Books & Articles

Renewal as a Way of Life: A Guidebook for Spiritual Growth by Richard Lovelace. In order for spiritual growth to take place, we have to grasp certain biblical principles. Lovelace guides the reader in developing a God-centered life so that one can be renewed individually. As we join together in spiritual growth, we experience renewal corporately. The book is read well by a small group of people who are committed to reflection and discussion and praying for God to do a work in their lives and in our church.

The Jesus Storybook Bible: Every Story Whispers His Name by Sally Lloyd-Jones and Jago. This illustrated story Bible for children emphasizes Jesus as the point of every story in the Bible – both Old and New Testaments. Jesus makes all the puzzle pieces of the Bible fit together. It’s great for kids and adults alike to engage in the truth and power of Scripture.

God’s Big Picture: Tracing the Storyline of the Bible by Vaughan Roberts. Roberts gives the big picture of the Bible in this book. He emphasizes that the whole Bible is about the kingdom of God. He shares tools for reading the Bible and he points to the primary subject of Scripture: Jesus.

Grounded in the Gospel: Building Believers the Old-Fashioned Way by J. I. Packer and Gary Parrett. This book emphasizes the importance of catechesis in forming believers with the essentials of the faith. One section even outlines an A-Z of the Gospel.

Chameleon Christianity by Dick Keyes. Christians are tempted to approach society by either accommodating to it and blending in so much that we don’t seem any different or by tribalizing and quarantining ourselves away from society so we won’t be affected by it. Keyes encourages the reader of this book not to compromise or to isolate, but to be culturally aware and to reflect Jesus’ teaching to be salt of the earth and light of the world.

Gospel Renewal Prayer Guide

The need for Spirit-led Gospel Renewal among Christians and churches in the west has been noted by writers and pastors for a long time. And with our world, and especially our country, spiraling into increasing disregard for God, this need is acute enough for all of us to see. Perhaps God is forcing our hand.

North Shore Prayer Guide

The 30-Day North Shore Prayer Guide was written by local people and born from the desire to meet God where he is working, right here in our communities.
You will find some entries are devoted to specific cities and towns that make up the North Shore. These aim to capture, in broad strokes, the character of a community and highlight some ways you can pray for it. Other entries are devoted to a theme or regional concern. If the information is surprising or of particular interest, you are encouraged to learn more and continue praying beyond the bounds of this guide.
