Sermon Scraps: Called to Work

Pastor Bobby’s sermon yesterday helped us to recognize that our work is not separate from our faith. We work because God created us to and because it is good (1:27-2:15). It is a gift from God that came before The Fall. As God’s image-bearers, we work and create, just as He works and creates.

Following are some suggestions for further reading related to work.

J.R.R. Tolkien wrote this short story “Leaf by Niggle” (1938-39) that expresses how our work echoes that of God’s creation and how our work is not for ourselves.

Dorothy Sayers has often reflected on work in her writings and this essay “Why Work?” (1942) summarizes some of her thoughts on work as coming out of who God created us to be.

Tim Keller expands on the idea of work not being for ourselves and discusses how we can bring the hope of the gospel into our work in Every Good Endeavor.

Hi! I love this topic and appreciated Bobby’s thoughts and sermon on the matter.

I also enjoy the resources at the Theology of Work project, and have listened to a number of their podcasts and enjoyed them.
