Children's Wing Building Updates
Our Children's Wing building project is underway!
Construction is anticipated to start mid-April and complete by late June 2025.
We are building 4 children’s classrooms under the gym for Children’s Worship and Sunday School (Pre-K/K, 1-2 grade, 3-5th grade).
The future home of NSCBC’s PreK-5 Children’s Ministry! Blue tape on the floor indicates possible new walls.
Updates
March 2025 - Wrapping up design phase
- After several more opportunities for feedback (including marking out a floor plan in the basement with painter’s tape), we now have final, “stamped” architectural drawings for our children’s classrooms under the gym!
- We’ve also picked finishes, flooring, and paint colors (keeping things neutral so that our space can flex and change with our various needs!)
- We’re waiting on permit issuances, with construction scheduled to start in mid-April.
- We’ve been working with our teachers to assess their needs for furniture and storage and have started meeting with companies who can give us bids for our furniture/storage needs.
- The basement is (almost!) completely cleared out–MANY thanks to all of you who helped make that happen!
We’re starting to make preliminary plans for vibrant, creation-themed, theologically-rich decor.
January 2025 - Annual Meeting and Vote
At our annual meeting in January, preliminary designs were shown to the congregation and a vote was taken (which passed) to complete the design phase and begin building in 2025. Shortly thereafter we received another anonymous donation toward the project. Thank you!
2024 - Congregational Discernment
Based on the existing need and feedback from our listening sessions, the building committee pursued construction quotes for work on the basement below the gym as soon as possible. Ultimately, local design firm SV Design and a general contracting and construction management firm Groom Construction were selected.
We anticipate that this project will happen in 2025. We are overwhelmed with gratitude to three anonymous donors who have contributed the funds to begin and likely complete this project. Whoever you are, we are so grateful for your generosity to our church and specifically our children’s ministries.
Our Design Goals and Values
As we designed our new spaces, here are the values and goals we kept in mind.
Serves discipleship
Useful for the varying needs of the space—learning, worship, play, building relationships, time together as large and small groups.
Inviting and warm
A place kids *want* to be. Doesn’t feel overly institutional (doctor’s office, school, etc.)
Safe
We want our space to be safe—safe from accidents, safe from predators, safe from mold and mildew, easy to vacate in case of emergency, etc. We will have single-stall bathrooms in every room, a check-in station, doors with windows, good sight-lines, etc.
Easy to navigate
An 8-foot wide hallway with built-in seating will allow families with strollers, diaper bags, etc. to navigate and allows parents to linger and build friendships. We are also mindful of “flow” for entering and moving on to other parts of the building.
Good stewardship
Not showy or needlessly pricey, but exhibiting long-lasting value consistent with the high value we place on what’s happening inside the space.
Flexible
Acknowledges that our methodology is likely to change over time, much more frequently than our building will! Able to be used in a variety of ways over time and within the special one-off programs of any given year.
Appropriately sized
Appropriate square footage per child with some room to grow. Allows for kids to move and learn in age-appropriate ways.
Classic and consistent aesthetic
Design aesthetic is reasonably consistent with the best parts of our current building and fits with the overall “vibe” of our church and surrounding community.
Accessible and sensory friendly
Accessibility and sensory considerations are built into our classrooms, including lighting and noise considerations. Classrooms are built with the age of the child in mind.
Lots of storage
We want to have ample storage in every room. Some storage will be built in and some storage will be modular, which allows our storage solutions to change with the needs of the ministry.
Maximize natural light, good use of artificial light
Though this is our basement, many of the rooms have full-height exterior windows. Interior windows in classrooms will maximize the available natural light to pass through to other rooms.
Soundproof
Contains noise in order not to disturb other parts of the building, especially the adjacent ones, and to minimize noise from activity above.
